Ready to start designing a 3D print?

Your first choice is to decide which program you would like to use to design your .stl file. I have two options loaded onto the classroom laptops, but if you are familiar with a different design program and want to bring it in on a personal device, you are able to use any program you choose!

OnShape

OnShape is an online 3D drafting program which offers free access to students. If your 3D print is going to be geometric or mechanically based, I would suggest using OnShape.

  • Go to onshape.com and create a free student account

  • Follow this link to the Intro to CAD OnShape learning space

  • Explore the online learning space and then start your first file!

Blender

OnShape is an online 3D computer graphics program that has been downloaded onto the classroom laptops. If your 3D print is going to be more artistic or sculpted, I would suggest using Blender.

Mr. Schmidt has FAR less experience with Blender than OnShape. If you’re having trouble, you will likely need help from other students or be able to use the online tutorials

  • Over the years, we have found that the online “Donut Tutorial” is very helpful at teaching students the basics of Blender.
